I found this graphic from the Economist sort of surprising. According to the article, there were 58 million deaths in 2005, which, with a world population of 6 billion people, works out to less than 1% of the population dying that year. When you consider all the wars, diseases, accidents, and crime, that seems amazingly low to me (in a good way!)The point of the article was that "rich world" diseases account for the majority of world deaths, which means they're more global than you might think.
One last note: diabetes, though only representing 1.9% of deaths in 2005, accounted for 11% of U.S. medical expenditures in 2002, which amounted to $92 billion according to the American Diabetes Association.
